I recently stumbled upon this post by AllSwagga and thought it would be worth while to pass along.

Before we get to the people way smarter than me, I’d like to share a few words about character.

Character is something engrained into your personality. It can’t easily be changed because it has been built a specific way based on your actions and the actions of those around you since the day you were born. Everyone has it in some capacity, whether positive or negative in origin. Of course, your character can be changed, but it takes years of work and a focused goal for how exactly you want to change it. Waking up tomorrow hoping for bottomless courage and the charisma of a bottomless Joey Lawrence, think again.

So what does it mean to have good character? It depends on how you define the best version of yourself. Figure out what that is and you’ll have something tangible to work towards. Put in the work. Build that character you’re dad always told you to build when you were throwing watermelons off the roof in the 4th grade.

To get you thinking, let’s take a look at some words on character by those smart people I mentioned earlier. They know about character because they were some of the most unique the world has ever seen. Here are 20 quotes about character by people who had plenty.

1 | Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.

Abraham Lincoln.

2 | The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.

3 | Our character is basically a composite of our habits. Because they are consistent, often unconscious patterns, they constantly, daily, express our character.

Stephen Covey.

4 | I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do! That is character!

Teddy Roosevelt.

5 | Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.

Coach John Wooden.

6 | How true Daddy’s words were when he said: all children must look after their own upbringing. Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.

Bruce Lee.

8 | Men show their character in nothing more clearly than what they think laughable.

Roy L Smith.

11 | Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

Ralph Waldo Emmerson.

16 | Most people say that it’s the intellect which makes a great scientist.  They are wrong: it is character.
